What Causes Chewing in Dogs?

Is Your Dog Chewing Up Your House? Learn the Cause of this Problem Behavior

We want to discover what causes dogs to chew. What will be the things that we need to do whenever incidents like this happens at home. Chewing or gnawing is a normal animal manner especially for dogs. Keep your dog in their proper places in order for them not to squash your properties like furnishings, your shoes, stuffed toys, and other appliances. I had once experienced having a ill-disciplined dog that crushed a big hole in his doghouse that he got the chance to run away from the house. Not only that, my dog even ate my desktop mouse and many other remote controls.

We, as pet lovers, must instruct ourselves as to why our puppies chew and squash our belongings. Puppies just act like they are human babies. When they begin to teethe, they tend to feel discomfort about the process of teething and in order to hold back the feeling of discomfort, they start to look for things and put them inside their mouth and chew it. Unlike dogs that are fully grown, commonly they gnaw things every time they feel jaded or disappointed by their master’s absence. Puppies are attracted to chew things when they play or every time they find some thing delicious and appetizing while for adult dogs, chewing is simply not a good habit for them.

We are going to talk about the critical behaviors which are the primary basis of dogs’ habit of chewing.

First, the process of teething occurs in the early stage of your dog’s development. There are certain contemporary gels that can be put on to human kids’ gums in order to suppress the pain caused by teething. There are times that veterinarians recommend to use topical gel for puppies that undergo teething. We should consider this fact because teething stage among puppies is momentary. You may hand puppies toys made of rubber or plastic designed for teething puppies. You can give them ice cubes or wash cloth that has been entangled and chilled in the cooler. The cloth is used to soothe the puppy’s discomfort feeling due to teething and has been proven to be a suitable strategy for small and young dogs. We can also opt to you using frozen bagel for a teething puppy. This way the dog will understand what goes for him and what does not belong to him.

Second, it is advisable not to play rough with your dogs because as young as 8 weeks, puppies already possess pointy teeth. They have the propensity to pinch while playing around. You should not encourage your puppies to practice biting. This is the standard way of canine communication.

Third, it is best to accompany your dogs to encourage them not to feel tired and bored. When your dogs are left alone, they may feel uninterested that leads them to chew your properties. However, bear in mind that behavior of dogs are not unlike. There are some that become relaxed and sleepy after a walk while others get more hyperactive. A good approach to this conduct differences is to take a leisure walk with your pet and then, take some reasonable time together with your pet. This bonding process will strengthen your relationship with your pet. Instead of giving them hard materials to chew, you may given them pizza or other edible materials.

Fourth stage is fear. Dogs feel frightened too such as thunder or when they see someone walking outside. Fear is a result of territorial nervousness. You can command your pet to calm down to stop the unnecessary protective behavior of your pet. A good manifestation to this process is by sitting down with your dog while relaxing, giving your dog and your self a breathing space.

Fifth behavior is the energy level of you pet. Dogs chew while having fun. This means that your pet requires more of training to get rid of these harmful attitudes. Provided that dogs have different energy levels, there is a need of intensive training and thorough program of exercise. An example to an intensive training is structured leisure plan which includes games like jumping or fetching, command statements like “down stay”.

Some dogs are born to be attention seekers. This is the sixth behavior. They need extra care from their masters. Dogs’ woof and shout, steal, gnaw, and roam around just to catch their owner’s attention. Owners have to ignore this negative behavior of their pets because this will drive them from the idea chewing your things.

Lastly, dog finds everything that he sees as delicious. When an item appears to be delicious to a dog, it feels like chewing it. The most effective approach to this kind of behavior is putting away these items that attracted them. It prevents them from eating or biting the properties.

When you pet is in good shape, exercises and plays regularly, chewing is not a concern for you. If the case arises that your dog feels some kind of discomfort, frozen bagels will end your pet’s desire to gnaw.
