5 Great Snow Activities For You And Your Dog!

Now that the first snow of the year is upon us…

For most of the country, today marks the first major snowstorm of the year. Up until now, we have had winter weather in the 40s, 50s, even 60s! This is completely unheard of in our lifetimes!

For the majority of us, this is a dream come true. While snow is beautiful, it’s also a pain in the butt when you work full time. Shoveling, increased commutes, the salt ruining your car…

But one great thing about the snow is that your dog absolutely LOVES it! The look on their face as they pup around in the snow is priceless. It’s one of those genuine, heart-warming moments that we live for. Even the most hyper of dogs will be tired after these activities!

Here are some of our favorite snow activities to do with our pup in the snow:

#1 – Play Fetch

The most quintessential dog-human playtime activity does not lose its appeal when there is snow on the ground. In fact, it makes it even more fun!

Your dog is going to exert SO MUCH more energy having to run through the snow in order to get the ball!

In fact, if you really want to tire your pup out, instead of throwing a ball, throw snowballs instead. They will have to hunt much harder to find it since the snow doesn’t do a great job of retaining a scent. This is particularly great if your dog has a bit of hound in them!

#2 – Make An Agility Course

Have a high energy dog? Great! You can easily make them a simple agility course that they will love!

Simply shovel/roll the snow into small mounds throughout your yard, level out a small path between each of the mounds, run your dog through it a couple of times, and viola, you have a simple agility course for your dog.

Our dog absolutely loves this activity!

#3 – Sledding!

A dog on a sled? What, you can’t be serious?

Yes, we are! Sit your dog on your lap and go down some small hills. Your pup will feel an incredible adrenaline rush, similar to what they feel when they stick their head out the car window!

The best part is they’ll have to run back up the hill in order to go down again!

#4 – Sleigh Dog!

Have a bigger dog? One thing that we love to do is put his harness on him, attach a 10ft leash to the harness, and have him pull us around while we sit on a saucer!

He absolutely loves this fun activity! It tires him out so, so quickly!

Bonus tip: Combine this with snowball fetch for higher impact!

#5 – Go for a hike

Going for a nice hike when it’s snowing is a wonderful activity that the whole family can enjoy. Be sure to apply paw wax to your dog’s feet. If you’re going to go for a longer hike, you may want to have your dog wear a coat!

Most of all…

The most important thing is that you enjoy your time with your dog in the snow. Have fun!!! Create your own games!!! Be a kid again!!!
