IRIS Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Pet Pen Review
The IRIS Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Pet Pen is a small enclosure for pets that comes in four or eight commercial-grade plastic panels that interlock to create either a square or octagonal shape. It features a double-steel door latch to keep pets from escaping the pen, and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
It does not come with a top, but a mesh roof can be purchased safely to create a fully enclosed structure for pets. The pet pen folds up nicely into a flat area for easy transportation and portability.
The four-panel model stands at about 23-inches tall 35-inches wide, and the eight-panel model stands at about 34-inches tall and 63-inches wide. The panels can be adjusted and added on to create smaller or larger areas, depending on the needs of your pets and the space you are working with.
The IRIS Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Pet Pen comes in seven different color choices – chocolate, chrome, white, blue moon, dark gray, everglade, and garnet red.
Not many pet pens offer color choices, so it’s great to see that the IRIS Plastic Pet Pen has so many different options to fit different tastes. It’s always nice to have options that will go with the look or décor you have in your home or office.
Size and Configuration Options
You can purchase the IRIS Pet Pen in four or eight panel sizes to fit the dog’s size, activity level, and the space you have designated for your dog. The eight-panel size is slightly taller at 34-inches tall, which would hopefully prevent slightly larger dogs from clearing the top.
Additionally, if you need an even larger space than the eight-panel model, you can purchase more units and supplement your current setup with additional panels to create a larger space for your dog. You can also create different shapes with the panels to fit within the space you have.
The flexibility you have in how big the pen will be and what shape it will take makes this very easy to work with.
The IRIS Plastic Pet Pen is a super affordable option when it comes to pet play pens. Other pet pens on the market cost two to three times more than this model, although many of them are constructed with metal instead of plastic.
Given this low price point, it does do a fairly good job of keeping certain types of dogs where they need to be, so it’s a great price for the purchase if you’re looking for a simple setup to keep your dogs confined in a designated area.
Since the IRIS Pet Pen is made out of plastic and not metal like many other comparable pens out in the market, this product is much more light weight.
This makes it a great portable option for those on the go who need an easy solution to keep their pups in one place. It folds into a flat form with little to no effort, so lightweight portability is a big plus for this product.
Easy to Clean
Again, the fact that it’s made out of durable plastic makes it very convenient to work with. It can be cleaned easily with a hose and some soap scrub, and won’t rust like other metal-based pens. This can be a big incentive for those contemplating purchasing a pen for potty-training purposes.
Yes, the plastic makes it easy and convenient, but yes, it also makes it more flimsy and easy for determined dogs to push around and escape from. Unlike wire-frame pens that have sturdy forms that keep its shape, the plastic panels are easily deformed and the plastic hinges aren’t the best at keeping the structure firmly upright.
Multiple owners complained about the door as well. It’s more difficult to first assemble compared to other pens that come fully pre-assembled for easy construction. A few people noticed that door hinges are easily broken and can cause the entire setup to be rendered useless.
Because of the plastic hinges that make up the IRIS Plastic Pet Pen, the pen can easily be morphed based on movement from the dog. An active dog can push the pen around and move the pen into a different area the owner did not intend for the dog to be.
Others complained of potential dangers this may cause, since the dog is able to move around and get pinned between the panels if it forms the pen into a narrow diamond shape. The viability of this problem depends purely on how active your dog is – if your dog is older or calmer and you don’t foresee it trying to move the crate around, this won’t be an issue for you. However, if you’re leaving it alone and think there’s a chance it will try to escape, you should test it out first to make sure your pet is safe in this structure.
Standing at 23-inches for the four-panel version and 34-inches tall for the eight-panel version, the IRIS Pet Pen isn’t very tall compared to many other options. The number one complaint for this product was that many dogs, even small ones much shorter than the height of this structure, were able to jump out and clear the top.
This is most likely why the company sells the mesh roof that can be added to the pen to prevent this from happening.
The IRIS Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Pet Pen review indicates that this product is a good, cheap option for small, calm dogs or for when you can keep an eye on your pup. The plastic material has its perks – like being able to clean it super easily and being able to carry it everywhere effortlessly since it is so lightweight.
However, you do face limitations on structural stability of the product with a plastic construction. It’s a simple setup that’s good for certain situations, but note that this is not the best option for keeping large or active dogs alone for long periods of time.
